Just finished Ha Jin’s “Nanjing Requiem: A Novel”. One wonders if a life story as beautiful, as remarkable, as powerful, and as flawlessly human as Minnie Vautrin even requires a fictional version.
Ha Jin’s style is weak, rendering the book a listless litany of Japanese atrocities. The crimes stand on their own. They are horrific no matter how you portray them.
Nevertheless, the book has inspired me to search for copies of Minnie Vautrin’s and John Rabe’s diaries. Truth IS stronger than fiction.
